Perhaps more than any other entertainment field, video games have truly evolved over the past 25 or 30 years. Sure, films have increased in quality and technology has democratized music recording, but take an gold-standard video game from the early 1980s and compare it with a mobile game that someone made over the weekend in their free time and the jump is astounding. One of the most revolutionary changes has been the creation of the massively multiplayer online role playing game (MMORPG) in which the player takes on the role of a character and explores an entire world, filled with other players just like them. World of Warcraft has made a killing off this genre, along with others like City of Heroes and DC Universe Online. A newer entrant into the online multiplayer field is SCAPS Agent by Slime Sandwich. They've taken to Kickstarter for the last bit of funding for what is already shaping up to be a great project.
In SCAPS Agent you play the role of a secret agent keeping the world from assured domination by your evil counterparts. You get new weapons and items and such, just as in other similar games, but you can get "real life" tech in the form of apps. The graphics look great and the gameplay is expansive and interactive in ways that few other games are.
Pledging to SCAPS Agent will get you some cool things. The game itself is free to play, so everything that you'll get will be in addition to getting to play the game whenever you wish. Start with a comic book and move up to ID cards and handbooks, original art and shirts, and even in-game items like shrines and money to put toward purchases.
If nothing else, SCAPS Agent is certainly ambitious. Their pledge goal is $75,000. It's a lot, but nothing that hasn't been hit by other games in the past. Considering the progress they've already made with the game thus far it's easy to see the passion an talent that has gone into SCAPS Agent, so you can be assured that any funding they receive will be put to good use. Check out their site to see what they've already got, and be sure to show your support on Kickstarter.
